Marcelle Miallet sampler |
I want to share with you another little sampler from my personal collection, this particular sampler was almost forgotten as I didn’t think anyone would be interested in a more ‘recent’ sampler. I found it in one of my boxes while looking for something and after putting a photo on Instagram was encouraged to chart it.
Since it is now a hundred years since it was stitched it can officially be called an ‘antique’. Funny how anything that happened from 1900 - 2000 still feels recent for me, but after all I was born in the 1970’s and am closer to that time period then my own children who are all born after 2002 and consider all things pre-internet as just about pre-historic.
It is hard to imagine how the life of little Marcelle must have been when she stitched her sampler during the first great war, it would have been a frightful time for a child and yet she managed to create a lovely little sampler that must have been treasured by her family and carefully cared for; a century later it is still in very good condition.
I researched her name online and found a lady by the name of Leontine Marcelle Henriette Miallet who could fit the profile of our young stitcher, the birth date though would make her a year younger than the sampler states but old records can be a little off or Marcelle finished her sampler at 9 years old but attended the school during 1916-1917?

A faithful replica of the sampler is available on ETSY and the website.
