Amazing hand painted woolwork pattern

I am presently working on charting this amazing antique Sajou hand painted pattern.

This is a rare pattern, and to be honest I have never seen anything like it before. The colours are beautiful, and it is such a shame that it's damaged.

Now, the question is... what are those creatures ? They are not griffins, nor dragons, not phoenixes..... Celtic birds ?

And how would one use such a pattern ?

I'm really interested in knowing your opinions.....

  1. The leaves makes me think of the Arts and Crafts movement and the long shape I guess would work well for a bell pull, at 80 stitches wide this will be perfect for the Arts and Crafts parlor in my Victorian dollhouse. As to the bird I have no idea but I like him.

  2. I like those birds too.... and though they look like many different mythological creatures, I've settled to calling them ' Celtic dragons'.
