Antique doilies

Cute little card, original art by Laura Martin
My dear little sister - Laura, lives in the UK and sometime surprises me with  interesting little finds and cute hand drawn cards.

Last week I received a small package from her with a super sweet puppy and kitten card, along with some antique doilies she had bought from a lady at a vintage market who said she had found them in the attic of her grandmother's house in Romania. She was certain that some of the pieces might be over 100 years old.

The first thing I noticed was that the two crochet pieces  were definitely quite old, as they were worked in a  very fine, tightly twisted thread that I've seen before in old crochet and tatted pieces. It's a thread you just do not find anymore. The crochet doily with the little woven centers is really unique, I've never seen anything like it before. The weave was added later with a needle, giving the crochet work an added, delicate detail.

The other doily is worked in the padded cord style with a needle, and perhaps a crochet.

  1. Those are stunning. Imagine how long it took to make each and every one of those little knots.
